You've signed your car rental agreement, have the keys in your pocket and are ready to hit the road. But, do you know all the road rules that apply to South Africa and its neighbours Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique. It's essential that you familiarise yourself with all the rules well before you slip behind the wheel of your rental car.

The very first thing you need to know is that South Africans drive on the left side of the road. This is especially important for all our American friends who come on over and hire cars, as they will have to get used to sitting on the other side of the car.

Secondly, for the sake of gauging distances and working out petrol consumption, South Africa works in kilometres and litres and not miles and gallons.

As is common practice throughout the world, seat belts in the front and back seats are mandatory.

If you absolutely must use your mobile phone while driving, ensure that you get a hands-free kit along with your rental car.

The speed limit within cities and suburban areas is 60km/h. It goes up to 100km/h on major thoroughfare roads and up to 120km/h on freeways.

By and large the roads in South Africa are in a relatively good condition, so your rental car should get you anywhere you need to be. You will, however, have to be on the watch for potholes, livestock and pedestrians.
